Internet Poker Etiquette
The normal courtesies for traditional cardroom poker are also expected in the Internet cardroom. Additionally there are new courtesies unique to the virtual world of poker that you will want to know. We hope that all players will extend these considerations to each other when playing.
Matters of poker etiquette are not rules, per se, but rather manners. They relate to the orderly maintenance of the game and civility amongst those who participate in the game. A player should respect and play the game in conformity with the principles of poker etiquette. A player who repeatedly violates these principals of poker etiquette is a disruption to the game
- "You can think it. You can even say it. Just don't type it!"
Use of profanity and obscenities in the chat line is a violation of poker etiquette. It offends many players, and causes them to not play the game. Being profane in the chat line is not only bad manners it is terrible for the game.
- Players of all skill levels are encourage to try their hand at poker, intimidation or harassment of other players at the table is not tolerated.
Needling is a breach of poker etiquette. While some feel it’s an appropriate tactic to set a player on tilt, it always hurts the game more than it helps it. Post-mortems and criticizing other players poker decisions is also a violation of poker etiquette. Likewise so is giving poker lesson in the chat area. It’s bad for poker to tell a player what’s wrong with his play, on many different levels. Why teach your opponents to play better? Lessons are ALWAYS next Tuesday, never at the table!
- Bad beats happen in the virtual world, just as they do in a traditional game. The player who ought to be mucking his cards pre-flop, but persists to the end is bound to catch his card once in a while. He deserves a "Nh!" (Nice Hand) and you hope he keeps playing that way!
- Do not voice accusations or otherwise engage in a 'shouting match' with other players at the table. Almost all online poker rooms provide you access to hand histories for your review. If there is any question on the integrity of the other player, you can voice your concerns to the cardroom's staff.
- The accepted point to join a game is on the big blind, or behind the button in Hold'em. All players will be required to pay the missed blinds when entering in any other position.
- The most significant situation affecting play in a virtual cardroom is the stability of the Internet. At times, players may experience lag or even freezes or disconnects due to problems with the connection. It's acceptable to bring this to the attention of a player who is lagging, but please be polite about it. Typically a player is wondering why the game is so slow without realizing that it is his/her connection that is making it seem like that.
